Recently I had the opportunity to go to Brooklyn Small Claims Court for another lawyer who asked me to appear to adjourn a case.
Brooklyn is unique in that they have 2 courtrooms with 2 separate calendar calls. One calendar call is for brand new cases, the other is for "old" cases. I was in the "old" case courtroom and apparently they do the calendar call in the "new" courtroom first then the court officers and court attorney move over into the other courtroom. I think that the courtrooms are just too small in Brooklyn to accommodate all the cases. Because of this procedure my calendar call was around 20 minutes late. The cases were mostly adjourned by the court officers who would call cases first from lawyers who were obviously "regulars" in that they were on first name basis with the officers.
It took me around an hour just to adjourn the case, when I thought I would be out of there in 15 minutes.
Brooklyn seems to be the worst of all the Small Claims Courts, at least based upon that experience.
